Frequently Asked Questions About Toledo Pride Youth Prom 2023
Who Can Attend This Event?
The Toledo Pride Youth Prom is open to everyone under the rainbow including straight allies! However:
- Toledo’s Pride Youth Prom is open to ONLY 16 – 19 year old High School students as well as homeschooled students, graduating no later than summer of 2023.
- Registration online or at the door is required to attend this event, with student ID or homeschool confirmation. For the safety of some of the youth attending this event, parents and/or guardians are not allowed to enter the prom space.
WHY QUEER YOUTH PROM?
Many schools expect students to adhere to cis-heteronomative standards of dress and expression at prom. We know that some LGBTQIA+ and gender expansive youth don’t fit these molds when it comes to self expression. Additionally, many students are bullied in school and have to be home-schooled, so they miss their prom, or maybe their prom experience through their school is not so LGBT-affirming. At the Toledo Pride Youth Prom, you are welcomed to dance the night away and bring whomever you want (as long as they’re 16-19 and graduated high school no later than Summer 2023) and wear whatever you want! This is your night to enjoy prom to the fullest! The only requirement is to have fun!
I IDENTIFY AS A GUY, DO I HAVE TO WEAR A TUX?
NOPE! This is your night! You can wear whatever you want! If you want to come in cosplay, jeans & T-shirt, or in a costume that is on theme, that is fine too!
I’M NOT OUT TO MY GROWN UPS YET, IS IT SAFE TO COME?
YES! When you arrive at the venue, there will be NO signage or anything Queer/Rainbows/Pride around. There will be signs for a “Prom” leading from Lot 13 to the building entrance, and an adult will be outside if you need us to talk to your grown ups! Some folks even come to Prom in jeans and t-shirts and change into their prom outfit and change back out at the end of the night! Just remember all bags may be checked. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!
I AM SHY AND GET SOCIAL ANXIETY, IS THIS EVENT RIGHT FOR ME?
YES! We offer a space space for EVERYONE! At the Youth Queer Prom, we will have a section where you can enjoy prom night in a quiet and relaxing way. Our staff and volunteers are also trained to deal with any anxiety situations that might come up.
CAN MY MOM OR DAD COME TO QUEER YOUTH PROM?
Sorry, no moms or dads allowed. This event is for 16 – 19 year old High School youth. All adults allowed in this event have been trained to work with youth and have passed a background check. If your parents have any questions, feel free to reach out to us or speak to one of our staff members at the check in table. We will also have onsite security.
I HAVE A SPECIAL DIET, WILL THERE BE VEGAN OR GLUTEN FREE FOOD AT PROM?
YES! We will offer something for everyone to enjoy. A full meal is not provided, but there will be hand-helds, dips, fruits, veggies, and desserts.
I DON’T WANT MY PICTURE TAKEN. WILL THERE BE ANY PHOTOGRAPHERS I NEED TO WORRY ABOUT?
There will not be photographers taking photos of this magical event, HOWEVER there will be a designated photo booth area. In this marked area, please understand that photos may be taken. Students, please be mindful of others and consent before uploading photos to any social media.
WHAT ARE MY TRANSPORTATION/PARKING OPTIONS FOR GETTING TO AND FROM THE EVENT?
Please park in Lot 13, which is uncharged after 5pm on Saturdays. For drop off or to get close to Lot 13, you should enter “Memorial Field House” into google maps to arrive at the drop off location. Upon arrival, you will see Prom signs and an adult volunteer.
ARE THERE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR THESE EVENTS?
Not at the moment, but we are still accepting restaurant food donations for the event. The Prom planning committee consists of members of Equality Toledo, the NW Ohio LGBTQ+ Coalition, Toledo Pride, Woodward HS Students, University of Toledo Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and other community members. If interested in assisting with next year’s event, email boardchair@equalitytoledo.org
THIS IS MY CHILD’S FIRST QUEER YOUTH PROM, HOW CAN I KNOW THIS EVENT IS SAFE?
The safety and well-being of all of our attendees is one of our main priorities. While we can not post all measures we take to make this event possible due to security reasons, rest assured your child is safe attending this event. When you are dropping off your child, our staff will be at the door answering any questions you might have. All volunteers have undergone background checks. For any additional questions you may have prior to this event, please contact Joe, the event coordinator for this event at email boardchair@equalitytoledo.org , or if ahead of the event at 419-540-8424.
IF MY CHILD IS ATTENDING QUEER YOUTH PROM, CAN I STAY AS A PARENT AND WATCH THEM?
This event is designed to let youth be themselves in a safe environment, therefore parents are NOT allowed inside the prom venue. You may stay near campus or hangout at one of the nearby restaurants. However, we do invite you to attend Toledo Love Fest downtown on July 15th (family friendly)!
WHO DO I GET IN CONTACT WITH FOR MEDIA INQUIRIES ABOUT THIS EVENT?
For media inquiries about this event, please contact Joe, the event coordinator for this event at email boardchair@equalitytoledo.org
HOW MUCH ARE TICKETS TO QUEER PROM?
Pride Youth Prom is $20, and we hope many can register and pay online! Depending on registration numbers, registration tickets will be available at the door. Thanks to our fabulous sponsors and donors, a limited number of sponsorship tickets are available. If interested, fill out the survey at registration!
MY QUESTION WAS NOT LISTED HERE, WHO DO I ASK MY QUESTION?

Event Details
We would be honored if you joined us in the “Unite for Love” Campaign for Giving Tuesday. Equality Toledo works to eliminate discrimination in our region based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression through education, activism, and other anti-defamation efforts. Without your support, we would not be here today.
Over the past 15 years we have worked on a wide array of issues: from banning conversion therapy for both minors and adults; or training nurses on how to give care to LGBT older adults, to increase awareness about the discrimination LGBT elders experience and train the providers who work with them. We have presented over 250 seminars, sponsored over 150 LGBT events including LOVE FEST, collaborated with passionate community members to co-host a very successful annual Toledo Pride event that now draws 20,000 people to downtown Toledo. Through Faith and Fairness, we have built a coalition of religious leaders and organizations in our community committed to the equality of all Ohioans. We have hosted several multi-faith services that were LGBTQ+ inclusive. We have fought bullying with the Safe Schools Projects and recently helped set up a local GLSEN chapter, which will be instrumental in keeping schools safe throughout NW Ohio. Through our Equality@Work program, we have been able to help fight discrimination in the workplace by working with companies and elected officials to implement LGBTQ friendly policies and have assisted corporations in the building or support of LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groups. Our latest project, the Equality Toledo Community Pantry, has served thousands of families since June 2018. We see the need for this and looking forward to growing this programming.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more work ahead of us, and we can’t do it without your support. ET will continue the education and advocacy work we do in schools and universities, hospitals, social service agencies, community organizations, and businesses around the community as well as exploring how to expand into new spaces. ET will partner with like-minded organizations in the Northwest Ohio area to provide resources to the LGBTQ community. We recognize the importance of this work and will work towards increasing our capacity to offer more services to the community. Our expansion will include being committed to working in outlying areas that surround Toledo. We’ve been fortunate enough to partner with the City of Toledo to add protections for our LGBTQ population, and we seek to do the same with municipalities that surround our fair city. Through community support, we have been able to open our own office space. It is a symbol of our viability, strength, and compassion. It is a signal to a long-term commitment to serving the area LGBTQ population.
The easiest way to donate is right here on Facebook, and on giving Tuesday, Facebook will be matching your donation!

This year we invite you to join us at our new center for an evening of remembrance and reflection. We wish that we would have been able to host the event on 11/20/19, but instead we are hosting ours a bit late. Please join us as we remember those who have been taken from our community too soon. Light refreshments will be provided.
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Equality Toledo (ET) is excited to host its upcoming fashion show fundraiser, entitled FLAUNT, which will showcase some of the region’s leading fashion designers, entertainers and performers, all while celebrating the influence of LGBTQ+ communities in mainstream culture.
The show will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, within Registry Bistro’s event space, (144 N. Superior St., Toledo, OH.)
“This is going to be an event you don’t want to miss,” says Steve Reamey, ET board member and event lead. “There will be about 50 models displaying some established and rising brands here in the Midwest.”
Toledo drag queen, Deja Dellataro, will be hosting evening festivities. Designers and boutiques participating include House of Dow, V Collection & V Couture, Detroit is the New Black, Rialoto Jeans and Ragazza.
There will also be an array of special performances from DJ 3PM, The Toledo Opera, Toledo Symphony, Toledo Ballet and Toledo School for the Arts. Special art installations for the gathering will be assembled by The Toledo Arts Commission and renowned artist, Natalie Laniese.
“Guests can also enjoy signature cocktails, appetizers from local restaurants and desserts from local favorite, Cake in a Cup,” Reamey said.
Tickets for FLAUNT are currently on sale at $50 per person. Interested attendees can purchase theirs today by visiting ET on Facebook.
“Every dollar raised at FLAUNT will help support Equality Toledo’s ongoing community work,” said Nick Komives, interim executive director.
“Your ticket purchase means more food for our local pantry, more ally trainings at companies and more gatherings that create safe spaces for our LGBTQ+ community members,” stated Komives.

Join us for our third film in our LGBTQ Film Series.
Based on a true story, Pride depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984, at the outset of what would become the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. The alliance was unlike any seen before and was ultimately successful.
We especially encourage our friends in labor to attend so that we can further strengthen our connections and create more unity within our movements.

EqualityToledo is excited to announce its first “Hear Me Out” event at the The Toledo Museum of Art. In conjunction with TMA’s Localeyes program, “Hear Me Out” will feature 5-6 people who will tell their story next to a specific piece of artwork. The storytellers chose a work within the Museum that they connect with emotionally or relate to. EqualityToledo is happy to invite the Toledo community to listen to several personal stories from local LGBTQ members in the hopes of improving understanding, awareness, and empathy in the community.
